Food labels for the identification of foodstuffs

Labelling of food - safe and food-compliant

Labels for food labelling – for a wide range of conditions

Foodstuffs are packaged in a wide variety of materials: paper, cardboard, a wide variety of packaging and pallet shrink films through to plastic and metal. The product labelling of food and food labelling with adhesive labels often takes place at the food company under very difficult conditions: moist and cold surfaces, partly already frozen products, partly hot filled and then cooled. Depending on the food, the packaging can also be greasy - for example, in the case of packaged sausage. This requires self-adhesive labels with high-performance pressure-sensitive adhesives, adapted to the respective application.

Labelling food: food compliant and low migration

The use of "low migration" pressure-sensitive adhesives, label materials, printing inks and varnishes is essential for the safe and food-compliant labelling of foodstuffs. This is particularly important when food is packaged in film, which often does not have a sufficient barrier function for food labelling.

Our own labelstock production offers a wide range of food-grade materials - together with you, we will find the right and economically attractive solution for the labelling of your food or frozen goods. The format or size of the labels for food labelling depends on your requirements: Adapted to the size of your food packaging or frozen goods and the printing system in your company, we produce blank labels for food labelling as roll labels for printing with direct thermal printers, thermal transfer printers - or as adhesive labels on A4 sheets for laser printers. Of course also pre-printed e.g. with your logo or other constant information: with low migration inks, in flexo printing or digital printing. The pre-printed labels can also be printed on printers in your company at a later stage, with individual information such as weight, shelf life, price, numbering and barcodes.

A number of regulations in food law and a labelling obligation (for the benefit of the consumer) apply to the labelling of food. In addition to general information such as the name of the product, the net quantity and the percentage by weight, mandatory labelling elements include the name of the manufacturer, packer or seller, information on the country of origin, the list of ingredients, the best-before date or use-by date and allergen labelling. The nutrition declaration is also mandatory. Sales units that have been produced or packaged under the same conditions must be identified with a uniform lot marking (to facilitate product recalls). Labels for food identificaton are ideal for applying this variety of information to packaging.

Take advantage of our extensive expertise for numerous applications in food identification with labels. We know about labelling in a broad range of areas:

  • Products kept at low temperatures, such as sausage, meat, antipasti, pre-packed ready meals and packaged fruit portions, including best-before date
  • Labels for food identification for use under cold conditions followed by deep freezing. For example, deep-frozen vegetables, frozen meals, pizza and cakes
  • Labels for logistics and shipping: e.g. ice-cream shipping cartons in the frozen area
  • Labels for food identification for fresh products such as fruit and vegetables in trays and film packaging
  • Labels for food identification for products that are hot-filled and then flash-frozen, for example in large bakeries
  • Packaged dry products such as legumes, noodles, muesli, coffee and sweets
  • Food labelling with labels for fatty foods, for example seal labels on cheese packages, with printed best-before date
  • Goods filled and labelled in dusty environments, for example pet food and fodder
  • Price labels on rolls for fruit and vegetable scales
  • Resealable labels on packaged products of all kinds, e.g. coffee, pulses and pasta
  • Easily removable price labels – also suitable for extremely thin packaging material
  • Food-grade plastic film for additional protection

At HERMA you will also find labelling machine solutions that are particularly suitable for labelling candy products and other food products.
