HERMA labels on roll: best properties for many applications

HERMA labels on rolls are made of top-quality materials to ensure razor-sharp print-outs. They adhere quickly and securely to a wide range of surfaces. Permanent or removable.

Thermal or thermal transfer printers must be able to accurately print on the material of  the blank labels on rolls – and the print must always be easy to read. Processing reliability is also crucial when you’re printing labels rolls in your particular printer. It only takes one label to cause a malfunction that can quickly bring entire product packaging lines or shipping lines to a standstill.

Best adhesion to different surfaces, trouble-free processing

The adhesive must adhere securely to a wide variety of surfaces – and labels on rolls are ideal in this regard, thanks to our in-house adhesive material production. The adhesive’s wide temperature range and powerful initial and secure final adhesion ensure the trouble-free application of labels on rolls, even at the high labelling speeds used in packaging systems, for example, and in logistics centres.

Usage scenarios for labels on rolls

Labels on rolls have a wide range of possible uses. They are mainly used where high printing speeds are required for large quantities of labels.

Examples here are adhesive labels on packaging made of paper, cardboard, film or other materials for the reliable identification of products and foods, wine bottles and other bottles of all kinds. Roll labels are also ideal for the logistics sector as classic address, shipping or pallet labels. Labels on rolls are also used for inventories and identifying equipment and components.

We can also produce HERMA seawater-proof labels on roll for you, with British Standard BS 5609 certification. These white labels on a roll are printed using thermal transfer printing or inkjet roll printing systems. You’ll find more detailed information on our seawater-proof thermal transfer labels and seawater-proof inkjet labels pages.

Frequently asked questions about roll labels

What is a roll label?

Roll labels are all labels that are arranged on a liner and wound as rolls on a core.

Which printers can be used for label rolls?

Depending on the label material, the roll of labels can be printed with all common thermal transfer printers, thermal printers, colour inkjet roll printers or also with CO2 laser systems (LAM).

The decisive factor is that the label material matches the printing system. And the specific requirements of the printer, such as sleeve diameter, maximum ribbon width, maximum roll diameter, must also be taken into account.

What are the label formats of labels on roll?

We produce custom-made roll labels in any desired label format, whether rectangular, square, round, oval or individual special shapes.

In our online shop you will find a large selection of common standard label rolls, made of paper (either for thermal transfer or thermal direct printers).

What do feed, winding and band width mean for a label roll?

Feed is the distance between the labels in the processing direction (the backing paper is visible between the labels). This distance is important for the automatic dispensing of the roll labels over a dispensing edge.

There are two types of winding: outer winding means that the labels are arranged face out on the roll. Inside winding, on the other hand, is the term used when the labels are wound on the roll with the front facing inwards. The type of winding depends on the printer type and the dispensing machine.

The band width is the width of the liner material, it is usually given in mm. The band width of the label roll is always a few millimetres wider than the label width.

What are the advantages of roll labels?

Roll labels can be applied by machine. This makes them the first choice when it comes to labelling packaging, cartons and pallets in large quantities in production and logistics.

The most important thing here is trouble-free processing when printing and dispensing the labels on rolls. Faults in the processing of roll labels can paralyse entire packaging lines for products or dispatch lines in logistics centres.

High-quality label materials with optimum dispensing properties, sophisticated roll technology and adhesives with high initial and secure final adhesion ensure reliable processing, even at high labelling speeds.
